Two things you should know about me: I’m on the pursuit to live an all natural lifestyle and if I can make something myself, I’m totally going to. Today, I’m sharing with you my absolute favorite recipe for a do-it-yourself, all natural essential oil spray for your house that not only wards off insects but also acts as a stress reliever for both humans and pets – all while making your home smell amazing. And the best part? It only has 4 ingredients.
The BS (Bug Situation)
So the only downside to living near the woods is…bugs. I mean like real bugs. Not just specks on the wall bugs, more like – that thing is the size of my hand – bugs. And all different kinds. Flying ants, stinkbugs, moths, centipedes and – you guessed it – spiders. If I had a dime for every time I threw a shoe at a spider, I could retire this year.
If you’re one of those folks who love bugs and think we should humanely rid of them, I’m sorry we have very differing opinions. However, I do make this essential oil spray as a natural way to keep them out of my house so I don’t have to kill them… that counts right?
The Family Addition
The go-to remedy for a bug problem is an insecticide.
✨ Side rant. ✨ Insecticides are SO bad. I mean have you read the labels on those things? Seriously, stop spraying inside your home or even in the near vicinity of your home – especially if you have an outside well. You could literally be drinking stuff that is meant to kill. Unless you’re going with the all natural route (there are some brands that work very well, Hot Shot Natural Home Insect Control is one of my preferred methods), it simply isn’t safe. Especially if you have children with wandering hands or doggies that likes to lick walls.
Not only do I want to protect myself from the recommended bug-be-gone harmful insecticides, but I now have a doggie and will – in the future – have children to worry about.
Stick with a DIY essential oil spray – it’ll do the job for you, and make your house safely smell amazing.
The All Around, All Natural Remedy Recipe
I did a lot of research and reading on what to do about my bug problem, and how to do it naturally. All signs pointed to sprays that are made up of a combination of essential oils.
Have you ever used essential oils? They smell amazing and are a remedy for literally everything. From stress to sleeping disorders, allergies to acne. I could go on for days, but I won’t. Here’s an awesome resource that does.
I never thought of using them as a insect repellent. But it totally makes sense. Bugs just don’t like how intense the smell of the essential oils are. And I mean they would be walking through it and practically eating it…
- Use indoors or outdoors (directly applied to skin as “bug spray”).
- Use on your dog to calm them, and to keep insets off of their coats.
- Avoid contact with eyes and mouths (as a general safety precaution with anything).
- It is 100% natural and will not harm you or your dog.
- Use as an air freshener in your home or car.
- The more essential oils you use, the stronger it’ll be!
- To ward off bugs and keep your home smelling lovely, spray 1 – 2 times weekly.
What you Need:
- a spray bottle
- Natural Witch Hazel
- essential oils: Eucalyptus Oil and Peppermint Oil (any mixture works really)
- orange peel
- Fill spray bottle 1/2 full with water.
- Add witch hazel until the bottle is 3/4 full.
If you don’t have witch hazel, no worries! You can omit this and it’ll be fine.
- Add 30 – 50 drops of essential oils.
- Add a couple small pieces of an orange peel.
- Shake and spray!
This is the recipe that works for me, and the one I like best. It’s super easy to make and typically everything I need I already have in my kitchen! It also smells amazing and I know it won’t harm my dog if she does happen to lick it (I’ll be sharing with you the all natural essential oil shampoo I’m making for her in a later post) 🐕.
