Creative Business Resources for the Beginner

it's Monday // July 25th, 2016

Today I’m sharing with you some of the resources that have helped me on my journey to successfully running multiple small businesses.✨  Many of them are books, but I’ve also included websites / blogs and podcasts (at least a place to start).

I mentioned sharing these with you in my earlier post on 3 things to invest in when starting a creative business. Education is definitely one of those investments. And again, I’m not talking about dropping $40+ grand on college courses. Pick up a book or take an online course.

You can do what it takes to better yourself as a creative entrepreneur without breaking the bank.

All of my business knowledge comes from the following resources (oh and trial and error but that’s a whole nother blog post) and I’m constantly adding to this list.

Please keep in mind, most of these resources are focused around jobs within the creative industry. However, there are a lot of tidbits that can be applied to everyday life – no matter your profession. Wondering if a resource is right for you? Feel free to ask me in the comments below, I’d be happy to help! Because I definitely don’t want to spend $20 on a book I may end up hating…

My favorite resources are books. The thing I love about books? I can take them with me! Yup, I’m working from the beach today. I’m reading a book AND bettering my skills as a business owner, all while sipping a piña colada 🍹 and getting my tan on. Discloser: Sadly, I’m not actually working from the beach today. But if I were, that is what I would be saying and doing.

Here’s a list of helpful books to kickstart your business and leave you inspired.

  1. Creative Truth: Start & Build a Profitable Design Business
  2. Make Your Mark
  3. Manage Your Day to Day
  4. Maximize Your Potential
  5. Craft, Inc. Revised Edition: The Ultimate Guide to Turning Your Creative Hobby into a Successful Business
  6. A Book Apart Series
Any / all of these. Mainly for people who make websites.
  7. How to Be a Graphic Designer without Losing Your Soul
  8. Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative
  9. Copywriting: Successful Writing for Design, Advertising and Marketing

Websites / Blogs / Online Courses

I’ll be honest, I don’t spend a ton of time scouring the internets for blogs. I have a select few that I really enjoy and find the most helpful – and that’s all I really need. There are so many websites and even more blogs out there. Just do a little research and find the ones you like best.

I typically judge a blog by its cover. If the content isn’t displayed in a visually pleasing manner, 9 times out of 10 I’m not going to bother reading it. Just sayin’.

Also! Don’t get overwhelmed by subscribing to all of the email lists – I know, I love all the weekly freebies tooooo. It’s like Youtube with cat videos I swear. You can’t just watch one. But don’t do it to yourself or your inbox. Eventually you’ll just unsubscribe anyway.

Helpful websites or blogs that you should bookmark today.

  1. 99U
  2. Skillshare
  3. TreeHouse
  4. Creative Class
Do the free email lesson for sure!
  5. Invision Blog
  6. Shopify Blog
I don’t personally use Shopify but their blog has some great eCommerce related tips.
  7. HubSpot Blog
Thanks to my HUBby for this one.
  8. CopyBlogger

I just recently hopped on the Podcast train and have been too busy listening to Serial, Undisclosed, Truth & Justice and Actual Innocence to listen to much else. They are focused around telling the stories of the wrongfully convicted and then trying to solve the cases. I love it. I totally feel like a part of the whole movement by avidly listening each week. If you need something to listen to (for leisure and because you want to feel like a criminal investigator) I highly recommend all of those.

Anyway… I do have one business related Podcast I enjoy.

  1. Being Boss

If you are looking for more I suggest checking out my girl Melissa Yeager’s post on 8 Inspiring Podcasts for the Aspiring Entrepreneur. And subscribe to her weekly newsletter while you’re there.

Happy Monday friends, let’s make this week awesome!
